This is where I admit that despite the negative effect these little monsters have on the native birds, and despite the fact that the aviation industry has nicknamed them "feathered bullets" I still think that starlings are a very beautiful bird. Birds have always been good at stirring up passions. This is probably why Shakespeare used them so often in his plays. This is also one of the reasons that bird watchers are so common compared to mammal or insect watchers. Sometimes a birding event stirs up a great deal of excitement even in a city the size of New York. Just a few years ago that was a Mandarin duck, which will be the topic of my next story.
